Home Game Against Grünberg: Our Baskets Are Looking to Break Their Losing Streak in Lobeda

The start of the season hasn’t been kind to us. We lost 51–65 in Freiburg, suffered a 49–86 defeat against Heidelberg, and our run in the cup came to an end with a 52–59 loss at TuS Neukölln. After two matchdays, we’re in eleventh place with no points. We’re not happy with these results. On Sunday, October 18, we’ll have the chance to do better—in front of our home crowd at the Lobeda West sports complex.

We’ll be facing the Bender Baskets Grünberg, a team currently in fourth place after two matchdays. They opened the season with a 71–56 win over Wasserburg, suffered a narrow 51–56 loss in Freiburg, and the weekend before that, Grünberg won 79–54 against Trier in the cup. Coach Tim Michel leads a very young team. Tonisha Baker and Emma Kramer have already scored in double digits on several occasions, and Paula Kohl is also a consistent contributor.

That’s exactly where we’ll focus. Playing focused defense and taking our own shots with confidence—that’s what will matter on Sunday. We won’t have a full roster for this game. Inga Ruppe and Magdalena Zimmermann are playing in the WNBL with the Mitteldeutsche Basketball Academy, and it’s still unclear whether Annika Schwarz and Elza Bierina will be able to play due to health issues. That makes us all the more determined to pull together as a team and give it everything we’ve got. We know we’re capable of more than our current standing in the standings suggests. Now we need to show that on the scoreboard, too.
