“It looked fun” – Newcomer Mya Moreland Introduces Herself
When we asked her how she actually got into basketball, Mya gave an answer that was as simple as it was honest: “It looked fun.” Back then, she often watched her father and brother play. It just looked like fun—and that joy of the game has stayed with her ever since.
If you want to know what sets Mya apart on the court, keep an eye on the area right under the basket during the first home game. When we asked her about her greatest strength, she immediately mentioned her post play. She considers playing with her back to the basket—both on offense and defense—to be her absolute specialty. So it’s no wonder she names U.S. superstar A’ja Wilson as her favorite player.
But Mya isn’t resting on her past successes—which include, among other things, two high school state championships. When asked what she wants to work on next in her game, she has a clear goal in mind: She wants to improve her skills from the three-point line and score effectively from beyond the arc. A force under the basket, the next challenge comes from the outside. This aligns with her life motto, which she wrote down for us in the interview: “Next play.” Move on, focus ahead—the next play is what counts.
And what’s Mya like off the court? In our quick Q&A, she describes herself as ambitious and calm, but also very caring. When she’s not on the court, she loves to relax with a good book or do puzzles. Add a big plate of pasta and some R&B music playing in her ears—and her world is just right.
So we can look forward to a player who’s right in her element and has big plans for this season. Whether and when she’ll hit her first three-pointer in Jena remains to be seen.
Welcome to Jena, Mya! Next play.
